The Fincastle Resolutions Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution has been named best overall chapter for 1990 by the organization's Virginia Society.
The chapter also received the Law Enforcement Honor Award, in recognition of its medal presentations to Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Donald O. Lincoln and to former Roanoke County Sheriff's Deputy Carol Paxton.
Cranston Williams Jr., registrar and editor of the chapter's newsletter, was awarded the society's Meritorius Service Medal.
Seminar to address work place literacy
Literacy in the work place will be the topic of a seminar for the business community March 27 from 8:30 until 11 a.m. at the Roanoke Valley Graduate Center, 117 Church Ave. S.W.
Stephen Nunes, director of the state Office of Adult Literacy, will be the keynote speaker for the seminar, which is targeted at company presidents, human-resource managers, trainers, managers and supervisors.
The workshop will provide information on problems caused by illiteracy in the work place, the cost of illiteracy in the work place and services available in the Roanoke Valley.
The cost is $15 per person and registration must be received by March 18 by calling 342-1654.
Sponsoring organizations are the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce's Education Committee, the Blue Ridge Small Business Development Center, Literacy Volunteers of America - Roanoke Valley, Roanoke public schools' Adult and Continuing Education Department; and the Virginia Western Community College Reading Center.
