ROCKY MOUNT - Susie Rachael Swain Starkey, age 71, of 747 Green Meadow Lane, died Tuesday, February 26, at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Born in Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Starkey spent her early years in Chester, Pa. and Wilmington, Del. where she worked for many years as a chef. She returned to Rocky Mount after retirement where she lived until her death. She is survived by her husband, John Starkey; two sons, John Swain, Media, Pa.; David Swain, Rocky Mount; four daughters, Sylvia Crews, Chester, Pa.; Dorothy Ingram, Stanford, Conn.; Brenda Tildon and Carol Pitts, both of Wilmington, Del.; one sister, Mildred Lee; six brothers, Clarence Staples, Roanoke; McKinley Staples, Paul Staples, Calvin Staples and Melvin Staples, all of Chester, Pa.; Marshall Dowdy; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two uncles; three aunts; a devoted nephew, Russell Staples; sister-in-law, Viola Starkey; cousin, Althea Starkey; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 2, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Rev. John Morris officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the church. Friends may call at Stanfield Mortuary Chapel on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The family will assemble at 747 Green Meadow Lane, Rocky Mount, Va.
