HILLS PLANS TO CLOSE 32 MORE STORES

Hills Department Stores Inc., which in January announced the closing of 28 stores, said Thursday it will close 32 more as part of its effort to restructure. No Virginia stores are on the list of closings. Hills operates in the Roanoke Valley, Christiansburg and Lynchburg.

The Massachusetts-based discount chain on Feb. 5 filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code. The company said then that attempts to restructure its debt had failed.

Hills, once the fifth-largest discount-store chain in the country, will be down to 154 outlets in 12 states with the new closings, which include nine stores in Michigan, eight in Ohio, six in Indiana and five in Tennessee. - Associated Press
