COUGARS BLITZ FRANKLIN COUNTY

If Pulaski County coach Rod Reedy was worried his Cougars might be complacent after winning the Roanoke Valley District regular season title and securing a regional playoff bid, he didn't have to worry long.

Junior guard Terri Garland scored 14 of her 24 points in the second quarter when Pulaski County seized control and went on to down Franklin County 74-58 in a Roanoke Valley District girls' basketball tournament semifinal game on Thursday at Patrick Henry High.

The top-seeded Cougars (20-1) will play Cave Spring, a 78-54 winner over William Fleming, for the RVD championship Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.

"I was worried that we might overlook this first game," said Reedy. "If you do that, that's when you get embarrassed. Franklin County was well prepared, and we started a little slow. But then our transition game got us going."

Pulaski blew by Franklin County (10-12) in the second quarter. Leading 18-12 early on, the Cougars went on a 28-6 run to open up a 26-point halftime lead.

Garland started the surge with five straight points and finished it by burying a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

"Terri got rolling there in the second, and it really helped us," said Reedy.

The Cougars led by as much as 30 in the second half, before Franklin County fought back in the fourth quarter to make the score respectable.

Kristie Ratcliffe added 12 points for Pulaski County, and Cindy Martin added 10.

Lottie Huffman scored a game-high 28 for Franklin County, and Crystal Muse chipped in 11 points.

In the other semifinal, Lisa Hodges scored 17 and three other Knights hit for double figures as Cave Spring (19-3) went by Fleming (12-9).

Leading 31-18 at the half, Cave Spring made 20 of 27 shots in the second half to turn the game into a rout.

Jennifer Kagey scored 16, Kim Stewart added 14 and Ali Colgrove 12. Regina Fields led William Fleming with a game-high 20 points.
