DAILY NEWS MAY BE SOLD

British publisher Robert Maxwell emerged Thursday as the potential buyer of the Daily News soon after contract talks collapsed with striking unions.

George McDonald, head of the unions' umbrella organization, announced that Daily News Publisher James Hoge authorized him to begin negotiations with Maxwell.

Maxwell, 67, heads Maxwell Communications Corp., which employs more than 15,000 people in 16 countries. His Mirror Group PLC publishes Britain's second-largest newspaper, the Daily Mirror. He bought three U.S. tabloids last year: the Globe, the National Examiner and the Sun.
