IN SPORTS - BASEBALL

Chicago White Sox pitcher Alex Fernandez received the Dick Howser Trophy as last year's outstanding college player at Florida's annual Governor's Baseball Dinner.

After pitching for the University of Miami in 1989, Fernandez transferred to Miami Dade Community College South. He was the first player from a school lower than NCAA Division I to win the award.

Fernandez, the club's No. 1 draft choice in June 1990, was 5-5 for the White Sox after being called up from the minors.
