KNIGHTS SWAMP COLONELS

It was sort of like watching a dam with a small leak.

You know that if you don't plug it right away, the hole will just keep growing until eventually everything crumbles around it.

Thursday night, William Fleming's hand wasn't big enough to plug the hole.

Cave Spring used its superior height to slowly disintegrate the Colonels and rolled to a 78-54 victory in the Roanoke Valley District girls' basketball tournament at Patrick Henry High.

The second-seeded Knights (19-3) will face No. 1 Pulaski County (20-1) for the RVD title at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.

"I was real pleased the way we came out," said Cave Spring coach David Layman. "We went into a little slump toward the end of the year, and shooting was part of it."

Trailing 8-6 with three minutes left in the first quarter, Cave Spring outscored William Fleming 25-10 to take a 13-point lead at the half. The Knights put the Colonels away in the second by making 20 of 27 shots.

The game was won inside. Cave Spring center Lisa Hodges scored 17, and forwards Jennifer Kagey and Ali Colgrove combined for 28 points. In all, the Knights' frontcourt outscored Fleming's 53-17. Guard Kim Stewart added 14 for good measure.

Fleming (12-9) was all but done when starting forward Marqueeta Randolph picked up three fouls in the first quarter.

With play in the lane secured, Cave Spring concentrated its defense on Fleming's hot-shooting guard, Regina Fields.

Fields scored a game-high 20 but most came after things had been decided.

In the other semifinal, Terri Garland scored 24 points to lead Pulaski County by Franklin County 74-58. Lottie Huffman scored a game-high 28 for Franklin County.
