BATH MAY JOIN TWO PLANNING COMMISSIONS

The General Assembly has approved legislation allowing Bath County to be a member of both the Central Shenandoah and Fifth Planning District commissions.

Bath County, which has been a member of the Central Shenandoah Commission since creation of the regional districts 20 years ago, sought the legislation because it has ties with both the Alleghany Highlands and the Roanoke Valley.

Wayne Strickland, executive director of the Fifth Planning District Commission, said Thursday that the legislation does not require Bath to become a member. The commission voted to notify Bath it is willing to discuss the issue.

Also Thursday, the commission endorsed Botetourt County's application for $723,000 in federal funds from the Farmers Home Administration to construct a water and sewer system in the Old Cloverdale community.

The commission also endorsed the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission's request for $737,100 in federal money to install additional security cameras, acquire a high-speed snow broom and prepare sites for general aviation facilities.
