WAR SHOWS NEED TO CONSERVE ENERGY

IN THE MIDST of the national fervor of patriotism and troop support, many seem to be seeking a way to make individual positive contributions. The Persian Gulf conflict dramatically underscores the need to conserve energy on the home front, to wean ourselves from our dependence on foreign oil.

Conserving energy is one way we can effect change, and adapting new habits need not be drastic or painful. Turn down the thermostat and wear a sweater. Walk rather than drive. Dry wash outdoors when weather permits. Recycle.

"Think globally, act locally" is a fitting directive for these times. It's mighty easy to hang a flag or a ribbon, or to walk in a demonstration. But to alter one's personal lifestyle requires integrity and commitment - a commitment that is relatively effortless compared to that of our service people in the gulf.
