PROGRAM OFFERS TIPS FOR DISABLED

Two representatives from the Southwest Virginia Transition Center at Virginia Tech will speak Thursday at a disability awareness day at Clinch Valley College.

Alice Anderson and Jeananne Dixon will talk about alternative strategies for students with disabilities.

The purpose of the all-day program is to show parents and students that a college education is not beyond those with disabilities. The Disabilities Act of 1990 requires new public college and university facilities to be made accessible to disabled students.

The program will start at 9 a.m. Speakers will discuss difficulties encountered by disabled people in academic settings, ways to accommodate students and financial aid. Panel discussions will feature students with disabilities and adult professionals who have overcome disabilities to earn college degrees.

Activities will conclude with a 7 p.m. wheelchair basketball game between the college faculty and a team from Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitative Center.
