VA. DOCKS SHOW LOSS FOR JANUARY

The state-owned docks in Hampton Roads had an operating loss of $179,000 in January, after earning $261,000 in January 1990, because of falling shipments.

Virginia International Terminals Inc., the non-profit company that runs the docks, reported Thursday that container shipments declined nearly 13 percent, to 420,624 tons, in January.

Revenues rose by less than 5 percent, to $7.8 million, while expenses soared nearly 11 percent, to $7.9 million.
