REBELS CONTINUE TO SLIP

There is more than a week remaining in the East Coast Hockey League regular season, but Friday night's matchup between Roanoke Valley and Greensboro had a playoff atmosphere.

The Monarchs used a third-period blitz to rally for a 4-1 victory over the Rebels, whose playoff hopes suffered another crippling blow.

With five games remaining, Roanoke Valley is still chasing Erie and Nashville for extra life in the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Rebels took a 1-0 lead 1:03 into the second period on Rob Wilson's shot from just inside the blue line. Meanwhile, Roanoke Valley goalie Bill Horn was stingy in the net, stopping 25 of the Monarch's first 26 shots through two periods, many from point-blank.

The one that got by Horn was a slapshot from Scott White at 3:22 of the second period, which passed through a screen of Greensboro players in front of the crease to tie the score at 1-1.

But the Monarchs broke through in the final period. Doug Brown scored the game winner at 4:23, and Boyd Sutton added two goals down the stretch to pad the margin of victory and finish off the frustrated Rebs.

Typical of this rivalry, the game featured brawls on the ice and in the stands, but the Monarchs managed to skate out of trouble, picking up only 17 penalty minutes.

Greensboro goalie Nick Vitucci turned away 30 shots, 14 in a heated first period.
