SOUTHSIDE VA. MAN DIES IN BATTLE

A Pittsylvania County man was killed Tuesday while he was taking part in the major tank battle between allied and Iraqi Republican Guard forces in the Persian Gulf War, family members said.

Army Sgt. Kenneth B. Gentry, 32, of Ringgold, was a member of the 3rd Armored Division.

Gentry, a tank gunner, was the third known ground-war fatality from Virginia before the cease-fire.

Howard Gentry said his son's tank ran over a land mine, killing Gentry and another soldier and injuring four others.

Gentry leaves his wife, Annette, and two children, Ian, 4, and Lauren, 1. - Associated Press
