HIATUS FOR `THIRTYSOMETHING' NOT AN UNCOMMON MOVE

Fans of "thirtysomething" should not read too much into ABC's recent announcement that it will be taking a short break.

After its telecast Tuesday, "thirtysomething" will go on hiatus and return April 23 with the six remaining episodes of the season. Replacing it for six weeks starting March 12 will be "Eddie Dodd," a limited-run series based on the big-screen movie "True Believer." Treat Williams will star in the new drama as a crusading lost-cause lawyer.

It is not uncommon for networks to pre-empt regular series for several weeks to try out new series during the last two months of the season. The pre-emption should not be construed as a cancellation. In the case of "thirtysomething," last week's episode in which Gary was killed and Nancy got the good news about her cancer, boosted the series to its highest ratings ever.

Overall, "thirtysomething" is ranked 63rd of 122 regular series this season. While that's not blockbuster status by any means, it's about the same ranking NBC's "St. Elsewhere" had throughout its seven-year run. More importantly, "thirtysomething" does extremely well in the key demographics of women of 18-49 years of age.

Whether or not "thirtysomething" will return next fall is still up in the air. - Cox News Service
