MEREDITH VIEIRA LEAVING `60 MINUTES'

Meredith Vieira, the only woman correspondent on "60 Minutes," is leaving the top-rated newsmagazine.

Variety reported Wednesday that Vieira was fired because she was pregnant with her second child and wanted to keep working part-time. Don Hewitt, the show's executive producer, balked, the trade publication said.

Vieira and Hewitt said she she had not been fired.

Two years ago, Vieira made a commitment to become a full-time "60 Minutes" correspondent. At the time, Hewett said, Harry Reasoner was a regular correspondent and "Meredith was worth waiting for."

Reasoner since has left the regular staff, Hewitt said, and "I need five full-time correspondents."
