A spokesman confirmed Friday that company documents outlined that the company would make an internal announcement Monday about streamlining the marketing division, The Washington Post reported.
Mobil has reduced its work force over the past decade through cutbacks and sales of operations to 67,900 workers worldwide from a peak of nearly 200,000 in the early 1980s. More than 4,000 people work in the Fairfax headquarters, about one-third in the marketing and refining division.
In previous reorganizations, the company has tried to place many affected employees in new jobs within the corporation, the spokesman said.
Reasons for the reorganization were unclear Friday. But Mobil and other big oil companies have been steadily streamlining their operations for years.
