OFFICIALS SEEK SOURCE OF TINKER CREEK SLICK

An oil slick on Tinker Creek was contained Saturday, but authorities say they are still trying to determine the origin of the spill.

At least 50 gallons of what appeared to be used motor oil were apparently dumped into a storm drain between 11th Street and 13th Street Northeast.

The oil came from a side creek near 13th Street and floated about 200 yards down Tinker Creek. Firefighters set up absorbent booms and pads to block and soak the oil.

"With the rain [Friday] night, some of it got washed away, but a majority is contained," Capt. Audie Ferris of the Roanoke Fire Department said.

Ferris said officials with the state Water Control Board will try to determine where the oil came from.
