CAVE SPRING GIRLS STUFF PULASKI COUNTY IN FINAL

Unless they meet in the Northwestern Region final, Cave Spring and Pulaski County will never settle who has the best girls' basketball team in the Roanoke Valley District.

Cave Spring walloped the Cougars 48-33 in the district final Saturday night at the Salem Civic Center to leave the two teams tied at two victories apiece after four meetings. Since Pulaski County won the regular-season title, both squads will wonder who was better.

The Knights (20-3) won with defense, holding the Cougars (20-2) to eight points in the second half.

If you're looking for leaders on defense, mark down the names of Amy Noell and Lisa Hodges. Noell led the defense in shutting down district player of the year Terri Garland, who scored only four points after halftime and went 2-for-14 during that stretch. Hodges, a 6-foot junior, blocked five shots and had a game-high 16 rebounds to thwart the Cougars' inside game.

"We had about four or five defenses we used, but we came out in a 3-2 zone and went to a triangle-and-two [on Garland and Becky Smith]," said Cave Spring coach Dave Layman. "The 3-2 gives us good coverage because we have someone tall in the middle."

Cave Spring's offense wasn't that good either. The Knights led 32-27 going into the final quarter after outscoring the Cougars 13-2 in the third period. So Cave Spring went to a delay game and didn't hit a field goal in five tries the last period.

For the game, the Knights shot 15-of-44 (34 percent), but that was sizzling compared to the Cougars' 14-of-59 (23.7 percent).

"We were going to try and score, but we were short a guard [reserve Nikki Clowers was sick]. So we said, `Back it out and see what they do.' But we've been struggling offensively the last five or six games, so we just kept it out," said Layman.

Pulaski County coach Rod Reedy said, "They were playing good defense. The whole game we were looking to score a few other ways than Garland and couldn't get it done. We wanted to get it inside, but we couldn't get any post play."

Cave Spring's Ali Colgrove led all scorers with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Leda Jones had 12 rebounds for the Cougars, but the Pulaski County center fouled out without scoring. see microfilm for box score
