With 11 seconds remaining, Glenvar's Chad Willis sank a 3-pointer to give his team a 48-47 lead, but Shotwell answered for the Knights' win. A last-second shot by the Highlanders' Scott Wagstaff fell short.
With the win, James River advances to the Region C tournament at Emory & Henry College and will face Lebanon on Tuesday night. The Pioneer District regular season champ, Covington, will play Friday after a first-round bye.
Glenvar looked as if it would easily run away with the Region IV berth Saturday, scoring the first 13 points of the game and leading 18-6 after one quarter.
But Derek Jones, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 19 points to lead the Knights' comeback. Greg Wilhelm, also a member of the tournament team, added eight points.
Scott Wagstaff, a member of the all-tournament team as well as the All-Pioneer District team, was the only Highlander in double figures, with 19 points.
Lee Waldeck of Bath County and Tony Jeter of Covington were the other players selected to the all-tournament team.
Covington's Adaryll Twitty, Robert Thompson of Natural Bridge, Gavin Clark of Lexington, and Bath County's Keswick Phillips round out the all-district team. Twitty was honored as the Pioneer District Player of the Year. see
