CITY CREWS CLEANED UP CIVIC CENTER

YOUR ARTICLE Jan. 29, "Getting the dirt out," was interesting reading. But it contained inaccuracies (or perhaps omissions is a more appropriate term). I refer to the impression given readers that the organizers of the TNT Thrill Show Spectacular were responsible for cleaning the Roanoke Civic Center following the weekend event.

While the show's organizers did remove the massive amounts of dirt brought into the coliseum for the show, it was the city's custodial services evening shift crew who actually cleaned the facility - wiping down seats, removing the volumes of trash, mopping numerous yards of concrete.

These are the people who, Monday through Friday evenings, are responsible for cleaning other city facilities - the municipal building, courthouse, police station, library, etc. Then for major events such as this one, as well as for concerts and the circus, they are called upon to put in extra hours keeping the Civic Center in shape.

The TNT Show required more than 10 extra hours' work on the part of around 20 employees who had already put in a 40-hour week. The "cleanup crew" and the "Civic Center employee" pictured with the article are actually custodial services employees. They deserve credit for their hard work and for jobs well-done.
