RANDOLPH-MACON DUMPS WASHINGTON

Jeff Taylor scored 21 points Saturday as Randolph-Macon defeated Washington (Mo.) College 77-53 in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (26-2) broke the game open after halftime, when the score was 36-32. Taylor led an 18-7 run with three 3-pointers for a 54-39 lead with 13:34 remaining. The Bears (19-9) never led in the game.

Pat Holland had 20 points for Randolph-Macon. Alex Gregory and Jeff Skor each scored 11 points.

Jed Bargen led Washington with 16 points. Robb Rickett had 12 points. Charlie Borsheim scored 11 points and Lance Shoulders had 10 points. see

microfilm for box score\ C. Newport 81 Emory & Henry 71 Lamont Strothers scored 31 points, including 10-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line, as the Captains dumped the Wasps in second-round action.

Christopher Newport (24-4) had a 36-32 halftime lead, but Emory & Henry (25-5) fought back to take the lead 41-40 with 17:25 remaining on a Ross Kirtley 3-pointer. Strothers got the lead back, 42-41, on a dunk with 16:54 remaining. Christopher Newport never trailed again.

Leon Hill led Emory & Henry with 37 points, including 13-of-18 free-throw shooting. Major Warner added 10.

Steve Artis had 22 for Christopher Newport, and James Boykins added 10.
