The Maroons routed Floyd County 90-67 Tuesday night at Emory & Henry College, and George Wythe's 6-foot-4 senior center played the leading role.
Green scored 13 points and pulled down two rebounds in the opening quarter. By the period's end, the Hogoheegee District champion Maroons led by 20 points.
George Wythe (19-5) will play Pioneer District champion Covington (16-7) on Friday night in the regional semifinals.
In the other first-round game, Lebanon (18-6) was a 75-53 winner over James River (17-7).
Floyd County (19-5), which last week won the Mountain Empire District tournament, saw its season come to an end as a result of the Maroons' quick start.
"It was the fast break," said Green, who finished with 27 points and six rebounds. "With the two guards and the forward pushing the ball up, we were really playing well as a team. And it was a do-or-die situation. We wanted to get back to state."
Green had eight of his points in a 19-2 run. The Maroons led 21-6 at the end of the 4 1/2-minute surge.
"They used their size to their advantage," said Floyd County coach Alan Cantrell. "They were very tough offensively. They jumped on us. And it was tough to play from behind."
The second period featured more of the same from George Wythe. It outscored the Buffaloes 13-1 during a four-minute span in the middle of the period. Four Maroons scored during the run.
"We got our mind into playing the game," said senior point-guard Geoff Goff, who scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half. "We didn't have a good practice [Monday]. We knew if we were going to do well we would have to get our minds in focus. [The bad practice] made us think a lot."
By halftime, George Wythe led by 30 points.
The Maroons continued pulling away during the opening stages of the second half. The lead eventually reached 60-34 early in the third period.
From that point, all George Wythe had to do was protect its advantage. And Floyd County never got closer than 21 points - 88-67 in the final minute.
Jerry Light paced the Buffaloes with 18 points, and Dale Marshall added 16.
