W&M BASEBALL TEAM DEFEATS HOKIES 9-3

William and Mary scored four runs in the first inning and went on to a 9-3 college baseball victory over Virginia Tech on Tuesday at Cary Field.

The Tribe's Adam Geyer highlighted the first inning with a two-run home run. He finished 3-for-4, including a double and the homer, and drove in three runs.

Dave Backus (2-0) got the victory for the Tribe (3-3), pitching seven shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked four and struck out three.

J.R. Hawkins and Fred Hatfield each went 2-for-4 to lead Virginia Tech (1-2). Hawkins had two doubles. Tech scored its three runs with two out in the ninth.

The Hokies next play host to Western Carolina at English Field in Blacksburg at 3 p.m. see microfilm for box score
