GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL WILL RECRUIT ITS NEXT CLASS SOON

Students will soon be recruited for the 1991-92 session at the Southwest Virginia Governor's School, as current students become seniors.

Recruiting posters were distributed in January to high school guidance counselors and principals in the school's service area, school Director Michael Bentley reported to its governing board Tuesday.

He and Sue Linkous will be available to speak to groups of interested students and parents about the Governor's School in the months ahead, he said.

An open house for prospective students and their parents will be scheduled in April.

Next year's curriculum must also be planned, he said, for the school's current students who will be seniors and for incoming juniors.

The curriculum is being looked at by Robert Covert and Lynn Shula of the University of Virginia Evaluation Research Center. They'll visit the school Thursday to gather data and discuss the evaluation.

"We will want to consider data from our UVa evaluation and will want to discuss possibilities with the Advisory Council," Bentley said.

Also under study is the possibility of college credit at New River Community College for senior math and science work under dual enrollment, he said.

The board spent most of its meeting Tuesday in two closed sessions to discuss a personnel matter.
