THE CITADEL'S NO-WOMEN POLICY KEPT

A state House committee decided Tuesday against forcing The Citadel to admit women to its corps of cadets, despite pleas from female military officers to open the school.

On a 6-5 vote, the Education and Public Works Committee killed a measure that would have forced the Charleston-based university to let women join the corps.

William Risher, chairman of The Citadel's Board of Visitors, urged the panel to wait until a U.S. Justice Department suit against Virginia Military Institute over its male-only policy is resolved.
