Police said foul play is suspected. "It does appear that this was a homicide," said Virginia Beach police spokesman Lewis Thurston.
The bodies will undergo autopsies today, Thurston said.
A search team discovered the bodies of Daniel Geier, 9, and Ashley Christopher "Scot" Weaver, 7.
"The area where they were found is heavily wooded, very thick," Thurston said. "There is some evidence back there that it might have been a place where children went to play."
The boys went to the same school and lived on the same street.
The search began Monday evening when the youngsters did not return honme from playing. Their bicycles were found at Birdneck Lake, near where the bodies were discovered.
The boys reportedly were last seen about 5:30 p.m. at a grocery store.
Divers began searching the lake Monday night and resumed the search Tuesday, said Thurston. In all, about 150 people took part.
"There was all kinds of trash, debris, trees and construction material in the water making diving operations very hazardous," said David Boggs, captain of a rescue squad dive team.
Scot's father, Robert Weaver, 29, was described by a family friend as distraught. The boy's mother, Tamara, 25, is in the Middle East on the destroyer tender Yellowstone. Scot was the oldest of five children.
Daniel's mother, Valerie Geier, 35, said her son had gone out to play about 4:30 p.m.
"His curfew is dark. We gave him a little more time, then we started searching the neighborhood," she said.
"I heard Scot's grandmother calling for him. I told her that Daniel was missing, too, and she said. "I hope to God they didn't go where they went last week, over to the lake."
