PHOTO OF FLAG-EARED DOG WAS APPALLING

I AM APPALLED at what people do for fun or whatever with animals (Newsfun, Feb. 19). I refer to the picture of the beautiful Doberman with the American flags attached to her no doubt already sore and tender ears. I love our flag, but there are less painful ways to show our patriotism.

I hope no children will try to copy this and attempt to ram a flag down their pets' ears. Dogs would naturally rebel. Of course we all know that even when an animal is harassed and tantalized, if it bites the handler, it's always the dog's fault.

If the Ohio couple's neighbor stationed in Saudi Arabia is an animal lover, I doubt if this photo was very appreciated. Why didn't they send a picture of themselves with flags sticking out each ear? NANCY SAWYER WYTHEVILLE
