MILL MOUNTAIN STAR IS CAUSE FOR PRIDE

I AM A Roanoke native living in New England since 1953. The article by Ron Brown Jan. 31 about the Mill Mountain Star brought back memories of my last day in Roanoke in 1950, when I walked to the top of the mountain with friends and schoolmates. That evening I got on the Powhatan Arrow and left for the Army. I was 17 years old. The military and the Korean War changed my life forever.

Reading about the star shining in red, white and blue makes me proud that the city has shown its support for the Middle East war. When I do occasionally return to Roanoke where my relatives are still living, the star is one of the first things I look for driving in from Interstate 81. It never fails to give me a sense of home and welcome to the Roanoke Valley.

And by the way, Roanoke still has the best hot dogs in the world at the Weiner Stand, and the fastest trains! ROY E. BYRD SHELBURNE, N.H.
