REBELS ROUTED BY HAMPTON ROADS

Playing their first East Coast Hockey League game at Scope since clinching the East Division title, the Hampton Roads Admirals routed the Roanoke Valley Rebels 8-0 Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 8,475.

The loss further dimmed the Rebels' dwindling playoff hopes. The Rebels trail Erie by four points and Nashville by three for the last playoff spot. All three teams have four games to play. The Rebels have three of their games on the road.

Dave Flanagan had a hat trick for the Admirals, and Harry Mews scored five points to extend his scoring streak to 12 games.

The offensive fireworks made goalie Dave Gagnon's effort seem almost routine. Gagnon stopped 17 shots in getting his second shutout in nine days.

The Admirals came out strong, and Flanagan put them ahead with a nifty play in front of the net less than six minutes into the game. Rick Boyd shot from the blue line and Flanagan tipped the rebound over goalie Bill Horn while falling down.

Roanoke Valley didn't get its second shot until eight minutes remained in the period, but the Rebels somehow weathered the onslaught and trailed only 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Hampton Roads scored three goals in a seven-minute stretch of the second period.

Mews pushed a loose puck under Horn's glove to cap a wild flurry and make it 2-0 at 5:52. Murray Hood fed a wrap-around pass to Kent Hawley, who found an open net at 11:45, and Flanagan dug the puck loose in the crease and scored at 12:41.
