BASF CORP. BEHIND IN CLEANUP EFFORTS

More than a year after BASF Corp. was cited by the state for polluting a James River tributary, the company has fallen behind schedule in cleaning up a landfill and related sites, a state official said.

BASF, which announced last month that it will close its remaining operations near the James and move them to Charlotte, N.C., and Dalton, Ga., is still responsible for the cleanup, the state official said.

Bill Toland, BASF's director of ecology for the southeast, said the company plans to monitor the site as long as the state deems necessary.
