Youth soccer playoff winners announced

The Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department has announced winners in its 1991 youth indoor soccer playoffs.

The Exterminators were the Little League winners after defeating the Kickers 5-4 in the finals and the Phantom Cruzers 9-0 in the semifinals. The Kickers reached the finals after beating the Flash 14-2 in the semifinals.

In the Biddy League, the Strikers beat the Blast 3-1 for the title. In semifinal play, the Strikers had defeated the Jets 8-3 and the Blast had defeated the Rockets 6-0.

The Eagles defeated the Blast 4-2 for the Pee Wee League championship after beating the Cougars 6-2 in the semifinals. The Blast had beaten the Sting 9-1 in the semifinals.

The Wham-Os won the title in the Girls' League, beating Quicksilver 3-2. Quicksilver had beaten Footloose 4-3 in semifinal play.

Recreation club gives tournament awards

The Cave Spring Bullets received the team sportsmanship award in last weekend's Biddy/Midget League basketball tournament, sponsored by the Williamson Road Recreation Club.

The Midget League All-Tournament team also was announced. Those named to the team are Matt McGuire of the Vinton Cavaliers, Greg Perdue of the WRRC Sixers, Xavier Lee and Michael Yates of the WRRC Hornets, Justin Shirley and Tommy Bayrer of the Southwest Supersonics, Billy Jones and Mark Snodgrass of the Cave Spring Scouts, and Andre Hampton and James Hickenbotham of the Wilmont Rockets.

Princeton places third with Roanoker's help

Carrington Cole, daughter of Nancy and Charlie Cole of Southwest Roanoke, contributed to Princeton University's third-place showing recently in the 1991 Eastern Seaboard Swimming and Diving Championships.

Harvard and Penn State universities won first and second places, respectively.

Cole, a former member of the Roanoke Valley Aquatic Association Gators, placed fifth in the 200-yard breast stroke with a time of 2:08.78 and 12th in the 200-yard individual medley.
