CAPT. DAVID S. SHEPHERD, a training officer at Fort Bragg, N.C., has deployed to the Middle East with military forces participating in Operation Desert Storm. Shepherd is the son of Marvin Shepherd of 6009 Old Manor Court. He is a 1981 graduate of Northside High School and a 1985 graduate of James Madison University.

\ ARMY PVT. JOE L. FERRELL JR., son of Catherine S. and Joe L. Ferrell of 1102 Norfolk Ave. S.W., has completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT DAVID B. WEDDLE, son of Virginia S. Garland of 701 Tuck St. N.E., has completed training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

\ COAST GUARD SEAMAN APPRENTICE BENJAMIN M. WILKERSON, grandson of Daniel D. and Charlene Wilkerson of 1014 Blakemoore Circle, Vinton, recently graduated from Coast Guard recruit training. He is a 1990 graduate of William Byrd High School.

\ COAST GUARD SEAMAN APPRENTICE TOBY B. ST.CLAIR, son of Rickie L. and stepson of David L. Jones of 4540 Hillview Drive, recently graduated from Coast Guard recruit training. He is a 1990 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

\ LARRY W. WILLIAMS has been promoted to major while performing duties in Saudi Arabia. Williams, son of Haywood and Betty Williams of 130 Heatherwood Lane, Salem, is based at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, S.C. He is a 1975 graduate of Glenvar High School and a 1979 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.
