SUSPECT BANKED ON LONGER HOURS

A would-be bank robber in Salem Thursday afternoon learned timing is everything.

He walked up to the Central Fidelity Bank on Electric Road shortly after 2 p.m. and shook the door before realizing it was locked.

"It was somewhat inconsistent with a professional bank robbery," said Monty Plymale, executive vice president of Central Fidelity. "Of course, the bank had closed at 2 p.m."

The commotion out front caught the attention of a teller who peeked out and saw a man masked in panty hose standing at the front door.

She hit the alarm for the Salem Police Department.

The man then bolted down Electric Road while ripping the panty hose from his head. Police said he was not seen again.

Salem Police Investigations Lt. Russ Gwaltney said police are treating the incident as a serious robbery attempt.

"We believe he wanted to make a withdrawal instead of a deposit," he said.

Gwaltney can even understand how an aspiring bank robber can get confused.

"There are some banks that have longer hours," he said.
