GRANT GIVEN TO BOOST SCIENCE PROGRAMS

Clinch Valley College received $61,912 to enhance the teaching of science in Southwest Virginia's elementary and middle schools from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Mathematics and Science Education Program.

It got the most money among 14 projects approved by the State Council of Higher Education for program funds. More than 40 proposals were submitted.

The goal is to increase techers' knowledge of science and seek ways for them to stimulate student learning.

The project will give hands-on science education to 69 teachers and principals from school systems in Buchanan, Lee, Dickenson, Russell, Scott, Washington and Wise counties and the city of Norton.

Three weekend institutes with classroom follow-ups will be followed by workshops in each school district for 800 more teachers and principals.
