SLAIN BOYS' FRIENDS STRUGGLE WITH GRIEF

A counselor at Birdneck Elementary School attended by two boys found slain this week says friends of the youngsters are sad, fearful and "mad at the people who did it."

Daniel Geier, 9, and Christopher Scot Weaver, 7, disappeared Monday evening while riding their bicycles. Their bodies were found about 24 hours later in a nearby wooded area. Their throats had been cut.

Police said they had no suspects and no solid leads.

School psychologist Clifford Hatt said the number of pupils who needed counseling was fewer than expected, but some reported having nightmares and trouble sleeping and eating. One boy drew a colorful forest scene that included two dead children and him beside them.

Meantime, a volunteer group of mental health workers has agreed to meet with ambulance workers and police who responded to the tragedy. Every police officer at the homicide scene will be required to attend counseling.
