HOKIES' BASEBALL TEAM DROPS CATAMOUNTS

Shortstop David Dallas got five hits and drove in five runs in five at-bats and Shaun Thomas went 4-for-5 in leading Virginia Tech to a 15-10 non-conference college baseball victory over Western Carolina on Thursday at English Field.

Dallas hit a three-run homer in Tech's five-run fourth inning. J.R. Hawkins finished with three hits, including a solo homer in the fourth, and two RBI, and Steve Render had three hits and three RBI, including a two-run double.

Tech freshman Jonathan Frohm (1-0) got the victory in relief despite giving up three runs in 2 1/3 innings. Frohm relieved starter Joe McIntyre in the fifth after McIntyre gave up seven earned runs in the first 4 1/3 innings. Jamie Patteson pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save.
