And Jervis has proved it.
He was informed this week that he was one of 100 finalists chosen as a Tandy Technology Scholar.
The award is given to outstanding math, computer and science teachers throughout the nation.
Jervis, who lives in Blacksburg, is one of only three teachers in Virginia - and the only one in Southwestern Virginia - to get receive the award.
The 100 winners were announced Wednesday by the National Press Club in Washington.
All of the winners receive a $2,500 cash award and a certificate.
"He is a truly inspired teacher," said Miller. "He spends countless hours with students, teachers, writing and research - we are very lucky to have him."
Jervis has taught at Auburn High and Middle School for three years.
He attended Clinch Valley College in Wise and received his master's degree from Virginia Tech.
Jervis was informed of the scholar contest through the school's guidance department.
His application, which included technical information and several essays, was submitted in October 1990.
"I actually found out about the award on Monday but we couldn't say anything until the press release was sent," Jervis said.
