MAN GIVEN 15 YEARS FOR KILLING LANDLORD

A Roanoke judge Thursday imposed a 15-year prison sentence on Herbert Arthur Otey for strangling his landlord.

Roanoke Circuit Judge Diane Strickland followed the sentence recommended by the jury after a four-day trial in January. Otey, 30, was convicted of murdering Girish Desai last March at the Twin Oaks Apartments on Liberty Road.

Otey, dressed in dark blue jail coveralls, told Strickland he wanted to appeal the verdict. Otey's attorney, Assistant Public Defender John Varney, also told Strickland he would appeal the verdict.
