Effective this season, admission to the pool will be $1 for preschool children and $1.50 for everyone else.
This is an increase of 25 cents for preschoolers, students and senior citizens. The charge for other adults will remain at $1.50.
Another increase will be the fee for a 10-hour swimming lesson, doubled to $10.
"This is still relatively cheap," said Tom Bain, director of the county recreation department, who is trying to cover the costs of a new filter and pump for the pool. The lowest bid Bain received for the new equipment was $3,600.
He told commission members Thursday night his entire maintenance budget is $5,000.
"We just squeaked by last year," Bain said, adding that his budget also faces a strain from an increased minimum wage, which rises to $4.25 an hour in April. "I don't know if we can squeak by this year."
The commission - with four members absent - unanimously approved the increases for this season.
In other business, Bain said he has requested that the recreation park off U.S. 460 be a regular stop for the Two Town Trolley bus during summer months.
County Administrator Betty Thomas said she has sent a letter with Bain's request to the Blacksburg Transit Authority and hopes to get an answer within a few weeks.
Finally, Ann Hess, a member of the county Board of Supervisors who is liaison to the commission, reported that the supervisors have "pretty much accepted all of the county administrator's budgets." It includes a reduction of about $56,000 in the recreation department's requests for l991-92.
The department requested approximately $378,115, which includes administration, playgrounds and programming, and was approved for $322,169.
