RADFORD'S MARTIN RESIGNS

Radford High's Buddy Martin, who has one of Timesland's longest tenures as the head basketball coach at one school, has resigned.

Martin, 45, has been the Bobcats' coach for 14 years and has been at Radford for more than 20 years. He was appointed the school's assistant principal, which prompted his decision to resign his coaching post.

"I had a choice [of jobs] to make. Obviously, I couldn't do both," said Martin, who played varsity basketball at Virginia Tech.

"I came here the year after Norman [Lineburg] came as football coach," said Martin about one of Timesland's best known gridiron mentors.

"It's funny, but the coach [Carlisle Hostetter] I took over for at Radford also had the same choice because he was an assistant principal."

Martin's teams finished 208-119 and went to four Group AA tournaments. Martin knew he had a choice to make during the season, but wouldn't reveal the choice as the year drew to a close.

"I just wanted to walk in and walk out," he said. "I would rather not even have the records in the paper.

"I've got mixed feelings. That's obvious if you've been doing this as long as I have. It's a part of you."

Martin also coached tennis when boys and girls played on the same team. Radford was a state runner-up three or four times, according to Martin's memory. But he takes no credit for the tennis team's success.

"I didn't know anything about tennis and I still don't know anything about it," he said.

Martin says there has been no thought of a successor. "I don't even know how they'll handle it. That'll be through the higher-ups."
