EX-ROANOKE PASTOR LOUIS SHEARER DIES

A former pastor of Roanoke's Trinity Methodist Church, the Rev. Louis C. Shearer, 85, died Thursday in Concord, Mass.

Shearer was a member of the Virginia Conference United Methodist Church for 42 years and spent two years at Trinity.

Born in Newport News, Shearer came to Lynchburg with his family when he was 12. He was in high school when he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join the ministry.

He graduated from Lynchburg College and studied theology at Emory University in Atlanta.

Shearer began pastoring in rural churches in the Lynchburg area in 1930. Later he worked in Clifton Forge and Buena Vista before moving to Northern Virginia. He came to Roanoke in 1967 and returned to Northern Virginia two years later.

Shearer dedicated much of his life to Christian education and led many youth assemblies in the conference.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. John W. Myers of Roanoke at 2:30 p.m. March 16 in Presbyterian Cemetery, Lynchburg.
