The council was formed two years ago as an independent advisory group to the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy, which is making the grant.
It has been responsible for six projects funded by the foundation. These include a catalog of cultural resources in Smyth County, two summer seminars for teachers, a lecture-discussion series on Southwest Virginians in literature and planning for a study of the Civil War's impact on Southwest Virginia.
It has endorsed other proposals from outside groups and has others of its own before the foundation's board of directors.
The grant will fund a brochure on the council's work as well as printing stationery and reimbursing travel expenses.
"A brochure will be especially helpful in telling our story and expanding our membership to represent all 15 counties of Southwest Virginia," said Edwin T. Hardison, council president and dean of instruction at Virginia Highlands Community College.
"Travel funds will ease the burden on volunteer members who must travel from Lee County or Radford to our meetings in Abingdon," he said.
