The victory was revenge for the Scarlet Hurricane, who were upset by the Cavaliers during the Marion Christmas Tournament for one of only two losses on the season.
Carroll County (18-8), runner-up of the New River District, cut a 15-point halftime deficit to nine entering the fourth quarter. But the Scarlet Hurricane (24-2), champion of the Highlands District, outscored Carroll County 27-7 in the fourth quarter.
Marion capitalized on an intentional foul, a technical foul and the ensuing possession to score six straight points midway through the fourth quarter. Minutes later, David Keith completed a five-point play as he nailed a 3-pointer and was fouled after the shot for two free throws.
The two big surges put the Cavaliers away for good. Keith finished with 25 points and Archer added 19. Three other Marion players reached double figures, as Eric Hungate had 12, Jason Null 11 and Eddie Boothe 10.
Matt Montgomery led Carroll with 17 and Andrew Hawks added 12.
Both teams advance to the Group AA state tournament starting Thursday in Charlottesville. Marion will play the Region II runner-up, and the Cavaliers will face the Region II champion.
