More than 700 volunteers participated last year, making it the largest cleanup event to date at the lake. Event organizers estimated that more than 50 tons of debris were collected.
The cleanup campaign in 1990 earned a first place award in the Take Pride in Virginia competition and a third place award in the Keep Virginia Beautiful competition.
Sponsoring the campaign this year will be the Smith Mountain Lake Partnership, Smith Mountain Lake Association, Smith Mountain Lake Policy Advisory Board and the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce. Assistance also will be provided by the Bedford County and Franklin County Litter Control Programs and the Booker T. Washington National Monument.
Team captain volunteers are asked to coordinate and direct a designated group of volunteers during the cleanup. Interested volunteers should contact the Smith Mountain Lake Partnership at 721-1203 to register their group for this event.
The cleanup will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, with several waste receptacles available at designated locations to be announced at a later date. Immediately following the three-hour cleanup, volunteers will be invited to a picnic at Bridgewater Plaza for an afternoon of free food, provided by the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club and entertainment in appreciation for their work.
Forms for the Take Pride in Smith Mountain Lake campaign are available at the Smith Mountain Lake Welcome Center.
