William C. Bowyer, 48, was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to a hospital nursing supervisor.
Roanoke Police arrested Sterling Nathaniel Oakes, 54, of the 1100 block of Morgan Avenue, where the stabbing occurred.
Oakes was charged Friday night with malicious wounding, but a police spokesman said the charge will be revised to murder.
Oakes apparently was released on bond Saturday.
Police had no other details of the stabbing Saturday. A woman who answered the door at the house where the stabbing took place declined comment.
A native of Bedford, Bowyer lived in Franklin County and worked as a painter, according to his father, Silas Bowyer of Bedford.
Silas Bowyer said he knew nothing about details of his son's death. "I'm trying to find out myself," he said.
