CARDS' SMITH WINS GUNN AWARD

Louisville guard LaBradford Smith, who made the winning shot for the Cardinals in the semifinals, on Saturday won his second straight John Gunn Memorial Award, which honors the most outstanding player in the Metro Conference tournament.

The award is voted on by media covering the event and is named after the former Memphis State player.

Florida State forward Douglas Edwards and point guard Charlie Ward, who made a 26-foot 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to give FSU its first Metro Tournament title Saturday, joined Smith on the all-tournament team. Louisville swingman Everick Sullivan and Virginia Tech forward Antony Moses, who scored 56 points and shot 62 percent from the field in two games, rounded out the team.

Moses was the first Hokie to make the team since Perry Young in 1984.

Many ballots were collected with about four minutes left in the game and Louisville ahead.

Smith, a senior guard, finished the tournament with 57 points, 16 assists and four 3-pointers. He is the fifth player to make the all-tournament team three or more times. The others: Louisville's Pervis Ellison, the only player to make it four times; Louisville's Derek Smith; Memphis State's Keith Lee; and Virginia Tech's Dale Solomon.

Smith is the fourth straight Louisville player to win the Gunn Award and the fifth in the past six tournaments.

Sullivan had 65 points in three games and made nine 3-pointers.

Ward, a freshman point guard, finished the tournament with 40 points, 15 assists and a tournament-high eight steals. Edwards had 56 points and 19 rebounds.
