For 26 years, Kistler was a member of the Jefferson Surgical Center and practiced thoracic, vascular and general surgery. He retired in 1988.
"He was a compassionate surgeon," said Dr. Robert Keeley, a partner. "His middle name was integrity. The benefit of his patients came first."
In addition to his medical practice, Kistler was instrumental in establishing the Shedd School, a private school for children with specific learning disabilities.
He also was a deacon at Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke.
Kistler was a well-known golfer who won many local and regional titles. The highlight of his golf career was reaching the final 16 of the 1989 National Senior Amateur Tournament in Houston.
Born in Chicago, Kistler received his education at Baylor Military School, Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical School. He completed his residency in surgery at Duke University Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ashley Kistler; one son, Gene Crosby Kistler of Roanoke; three daughters, Ashley Kistler of Richmond; Elly Kistler Cote of Charlottesville and Mary Kathryn Kistler of Charlotte, N.C.
A memorial service will be held at noon Monday at Second Presbyterian Church.
