The new case did not appear related to several Washington state Sudafed cyanide tamperings that killed two people died and made a third person ill, the FBI said.
William D. Gore, special agent in charge of the Seattle FBI office, said the woman from Hawaii had purchased the medicine before a nationwide recall of Sudafed capsules issued last Sunday.
It was unclear where she bought the capsules, Gore said. Investigators were checking whether they were bought at airports in Los Angeles or San Francisco, or in Hawaii.
"She subsequently became ill and was treated by her local physician," Gore said. "Blood samples from the woman revealed traces of cyanide, although the amount was only slightly higher than what would be considered as normal levels."
