TECH BASEBALL TEAM WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT

David Dallas' triple in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie and two more runs scored in the inning as Virginia Tech defeated winless Howard 7-4 Saturday for its fifth consecutive college baseball victory.

Howard (0-12) led 2-0 after one inning on Lee Jones' two-run home run. Tech cut it to 3-2 in the third, then went ahead 4-3 on Justin Dobson's single in the fourth. Howard made it 4-4 in the fifth before the decisive eighth inning gave the Hokies (6-2) the lead for good.

Tech starter Les Jennette struck out 11 in eight innings and picked up his first win. Jamie Patteson earned his third save by pitching the ninth.

Tech's next game will be Monday against nationally ranked Northridge State in the Pepsi/Me-N-Ed's Classic at Fresno, Calif.
