SKIING SEASON ENDING

The skiing season rapidly is winding down in Virginia, with several resorts now closed, including The Homestead and Massanutten.

Bryce closed much of last week, but used the late-week cold front to make snow and reopened Saturday for day-skiing only on one slope where there was a 20-inch base.

Still operating fulltime is Virginia's Wintergreen, which reported a 33-inch base and four slopes open Saturday.

In West Virginia, Winterplace has closed, but other resorts remain open, although some Saturday were reporting a base of only 1 1/2 feet.

With a 36-inch base Saturday and 33 slopes open, Snowshoe, near Marlinton, W.Va., expects to remain open through Easter.

Ski Beech and Sugar Mountain continue to operate in North Carolina, where they reported a base Saturday of just over 20 inches and a packed-powder surface.
